Analysis. We provide a range of tests to suit the needs of gardeners, aquarists, small and large scale farmers, nurseries and other industries including fish farming and all types of horticulture and sporting facilities. Our tests are designed to provide solid technical information which can be used to make effective decisions about soil and water management. We help people answer questions like "Is my water suitable for drinking?" or "What treatment does my water need?" Tests can also identify potential uses of your water or can warn you of possible problems and even help you work out water management or recycling strategies.

Clients. We analyse water and supply water testing instruments and test kits to a wide variety of clients. These have included wholesale production nurseries, vineyards, householders, vegetable growers, hydroponicists, Municipal Water authorities, City Councils, olive and fruit growers, sporting facilities, small swimming pool operators, the water treatment industry, a number of large and small scale farmers including organic produce, processing, dairying, egg production and horse breeding, and town and city householders. Some other fields our customers have come from include aviation, mining, aquaculture, biomedical research, health and medical services, hospitality, food processing, brewing, food retailing, materials processing and handling and petrochemicals. So this shows the wide variety of people who have found our products and services useful.

DIY testing. Part of testing water and food is the testing that people can do for themselves. Now there is a large range of easy to use, affordable and practical test instruments and kits available. For example popular meters include pH and conductivity meters. Electronic thermometers and temperature loggers make temperature measurements easy and ensure goals such as food safety. As well as this there is a growing range of chemical / instrument kits where the first steps require a simple chemical kit with the final measurement read from a colorimeter. A wide range of test kits for most commonly measured water parameters is also available. Some kits are packaged for specific applications such as water quality, pools, hydroponics and agriculture.

We can help you chose test equipment so you can start testing on a regular basis at home or work. It's not hard for ordinary folks. We will help you get going - in other words because we are a lab, we are always there to back you up with your own testing. Our catalogue shows the most popular and common tests, kits and meters. If there is something you need that's not in the catalogue please let us know because it is most likely we can get it for you. We supply a range of excellent user friendly test kits for testing bacteriological quality of water. These are the same tests we have been using in the lab successfully for some time so we offer them with confidence.

Filters. We carry a basic range of domestic water filters, and can also supply filters for more demanding situations. For example check our catalogue for the range of cartridge water filters, reverse osmosis filters and UV filters. We also supply a range of cartridges to suit these filters. Call us if you need advice on which cartridges to choose. We have key links with established water treatment providers. This enables us to follow through from testing to quoting on more complicated water treatment installations. These include automatic backwash media filters for whole house and light industrial applications, UV sterilisation, ozone treatments, water softeners, larger capacity ion exchange and activated carbon filters, agricultural sediment filters, high capacity reverse osmosis and specialised iron and manganese reduction filters. Our focus is making sure you get a filter or treatment solution designed to achieve your water quality goals. Our associations with industry partners allows us to readily bring in expertise in water treatment solutions for a range of industries.

Water samples

How to take and send samples. For water samples which are to be tested for irrigation, stock, general farm use or drinking (but not bacteria testing - see below), fill a plastic bottle previously used for bottled drinking water. Use a bottle that has previously held spring or pure water not a bottle that has held any type of mineral water or fortified sports drink. Rinse it well with the actual sample water before finally filling it. Try to fill the container completely so there is no air inside (this is because we routinely test for gases like carbon dioxide so need to exclude air). Alternatively use one of our water sample bottles. For bacterial analysis use our sterile sample bottles. Order a bacteria water test starting at Bacteria tests for water. To take water samples for bacteria testing be very careful to keep fingers away from the bottle opening or inside of the lid. Fill from a tap or from the source if possible and not from another container.

Soil samples

We test for soluble salts and major nutrients in soils and soilless mixes. We only require about 200 grams of soil (about 6 ozs). Take 5 - 6 samples from around your garden or paddock or from the nursery. Take samples from areas where you will be growing your veges or crop etc. Most of the time we will be interested in what's happening in the root zone so for most pastures, gardens etc this will usually be no deeper than 10 cm (4 inches). Ring if you are not sure where to sample. Put the individual samples together. We mix them in the lab to give a representative sample.

Try to get soil or water samples to us as soon as possible. Use Express Post if you can. Send samples to Apps Laboratories 115 Collie Rd Gembrook 3783.
